Winnipeg Spine Program

The Winnipeg Spine Program is proud to offer a variety of non-surgical and surgical treatment options for patients with spinal conditions. Here are some of the programs and treatment options available to our patients:

Spine Assessment Clinic Unique to the Winnipeg Spine Program, the Spine Assessment Clinic is a an initial assessment clinic where patients are evaluated for spinal conditions. Here, our team of expert physical therapists are specifically trained to distinguish surgical and non-surgical spinal conditions. For patients, requiring surgical intervention, referrals are sent to spinal surgeons for review. Where non-surgical treatment may be necessary, our specially trained physical therapists will provide recommendations and treatments to help you with your condition.

Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery Our surgeons[link] are subspecialty trained spinal surgeons with expertise in minimally invasive spinal surgery. In select cases, minimally invasive techniques allow for patients to be treated with specialized instruments so that surgeons can work through smaller incisions to treat the underlying spinal condition. In general, these techniques will often allow patients to have better pain management after surgery and faster recovery.

Spinal Arthroplasty Spinal arthroplasty is an evolving surgical and technological innovation that is aimed at replacing degenerated spinal discs with a metallic or composite implant so as to allow the patient to maintain normal spinal mobility. A number of such devices have been developed and are used in select conditions. The surgeons of the Winnipeg Spine Program are continually evaluating this technology as the performance characteristics of these implants improve. At the present time, within the Canadian health care system, use of spinal arthroplasty implants remains investigational.

Complex Spinal Reconstruction Trauma, tumor and congenital and degenerative disorders can result in unstable and weakened spinal columns or significant neurological defects. The treatment of these complex disorders often involved multiple vectors of surgical treatment in the utilization of complex spinal hardware.

All members of the group have extensive experience in the provision and conduct of such complex surgical endeavors. Anterior, anterior lateral, posterior, posterior lateral and multi-segmental instrumentation systems and surgical treatments are available.
